The Rt Rev Peter Adebiyi, popularly known as ‘NADECO Bishop’ for his opposition to military rule in the 80s and 90s, is dead.
He died on Thursday around 10 pm after a prolonged sickness at 78.
His former spokesman, Mr. Tunji Oguntuase, and his son Adeboye Adebiyi, confirmed his death.
A statement by Adeboye Adebiyi informed that the cleric retired from the Lagos West Diocese of the Anglican Communion in 2013 at 70.
Born on April 27, 1943, at Osi-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Adebiyi was ordained a deacon in1970 and m a priest in 1971.

He first served as a priest at the Holy Trinity Church of the Anglican Communion, Ilawe Ekiti.
He was preferred a canon in 1983 and was the vicar of Archbishop Vining Memorial Church, Ikeja between 1987 and May 1993.
He was collated an archdeacon in 1990 and consecrated Bishop of Owo Diocese on May 26, 1993.
In 1999, Bishop Peter Awelewa Adebiyi was translated to the See of the Diocese of Lagos West.
The former lecturer joined progressive forces to battle the military in the post-June 12 annulment years, earning him the ‘NADECO Bishop’ tag.
Adebiyi demanded for return to civil rule, always calling the government to order and giving suggestions on how to move the nation forward.
He believed so much that without a restructured Nigeria, the country would not make progress.
His wife Caroline Adebiyi died a few years ago.
