David Oyelowo partners Will Smith on adaptation of Tola Okogwu’s novel

Nigerian-born actor and producer, David Oyelowo will be co-producing an adaptation of Tola Okogwu’s ‘Onyeka and the Academy of Sun’ with Hollywood great, Will Smith.

Smith’s production house Westbrook Studios and Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon are partnering with Netflix to produce the film adaptation.

According to multiple reports, the adaptation will be scripted by Ola Shokunbi, who pitched the adaptation to Netflix.

‘Onyeka and the Academy of Sun’ follows the story of a teenager who learns she has powers and travels to Nigeria to learn more about her origins where she discovers a threat to her newfound magical community.

Hailed by critics, the book has been described as the love child of ‘Black Panther’ and ‘X-Men’ or ‘Percy Jackson’.
