
Two persons died in an accident at Nawfia along the Awka-Enugu expressway in Anambra State.
The crash, which occurred around 2.20 pm, involved a Mercedes 911 truck and Toyota Highlander SUV with four persons on board.
An eyewitness said the Highlander driver, heading towards the Enugu axis, overtook wrongfully and nearly rammed into the truck heading towards Onitsha in a single carriageway.
“The truck driver veered off the road while trying to dodge the Highlander and fell on its side with two of his passengers trapped under the truck,” he said.
Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Adeoye Irelewuyi confirmed the incident, blaming the crash on wrongful overtaking.
He sympathized with the deceased families, urging drivers to watch and ensure the road was clear before overtaking.
He said, “A Fatal Road traffic crash happened at Nawfia by Awka-Enugu expressway today 21st February 2022 at about 14:20hours
“The crash was between two vehicles: An unidentified commercial driver of a blue/black Mercedes 911 truck with registration number: AH367UWN, and an unidentified driver of a private silver Toyota Highlander SUV with registration number: ACA688PX.
“The crash involved 4 male adults. 2 male adults (Passengers of the truck) were killed, while nobody was injured.
“The cause of the fatal crash was wrongful overtaking (WOV). As at the time of filling this report, the killed victims are still trapped under the fallen truck.
“Efforts are being made by FRSC Awka Sector Command personnel to remove the trapped bodies and clear obstruction caused.”
