A 64-year-old man, Segun George, on Tuesday, appeared before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan over alleged N16 million land fraud.
George, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretences and stealing.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, ASP Ndaraka Essien, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with others still at large, on Jan. 8 at about 12:30 p.m. at Alhaji Muibu Layout, Akobo, Ibadan.
Essien said that the defendant collected the sum of N16 million from the complainant, Mr Olufemi Mayeko, on the pretext of selling some plots of land to him.
He said that the defendant, however, converted the money to his personal use.
Essien said the offences contravened sections 390 (9), 419 and 516 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.
The defence counsel, Mr A. Olayiwola, urged the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Ogunkanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
Ogunkanmi ordered that one of the sureties must own a landed property, while the other surety must be the defendant’s relation.
She adjourned the case until April 12, for mention.
