Barcelona have stepped up efforts to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri, with reports indicating the Spain international prefers a move to the Catalan giants over Real Madrid this summer.
According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Barcelona have already held discussions with Rodri’s representatives regarding the framework of a potential transfer. While Real Madrid remain interested in the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, the midfielder is said to favour joining Barcelona.
Rodri is reportedly attracted by Barcelona’s sporting project and the opportunity to reunite with several of his Spain teammates, including Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsí, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Pedri, Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal.
Real Madrid had previously explored a move for the 30-year-old, with personal terms believed to be achievable. However, negotiations with Manchester City over a transfer fee have yet to progress, while Barcelona’s interest has intensified.
The Catalan club’s pursuit has also been influenced by the long-term injury to midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who is expected to miss an extended period after suffering a medial collateral ligament injury. However, Barcelona may need to offload players before they can complete a deal due to financial constraints.
Rodri has entered the final year of his contract with Manchester City and has reportedly shown little interest in signing an extension. Earlier this year, he expressed his desire to return to Spain and play in La Liga again before the end of his career.
The midfielder further enhanced his reputation by captaining Spain to the 2026 FIFA World Cup title, winning the tournament’s Golden Ball after starring in all eight matches. He had previously been named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024.
Since joining Manchester City from Atlético Madrid in 2019, Rodri has enjoyed remarkable success, winning four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and the UEFA Champions League, where he scored the decisive goal in the 2023 final. He has made 298 appearances for City, registering 28 goals and 32 assists.
