Ned Nwoko Challenges Okowa’s Victory in APC Senatorial Primary

Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, has formally contested the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary that produced former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as the party’s candidate.

According to reports, Nwoko submitted a petition challenging Okowa’s emergence following the recently concluded APC primaries.

Sources within the party disclosed that the senator is questioning Okowa’s eligibility, alleging that the former governor did not officially resign his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before joining the APC.

Okowa defected to the APC on April 23 alongside Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, a move that significantly altered the political landscape in the state.

Meanwhile, similar disputes have reportedly emerged in Rivers State, where some dissatisfied APC aspirants are challenging the nomination of Kingsley Chinda as the party’s governorship candidate.

Chinda, who served as Minority Leader of the House of Representatives while representing Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency, secured the party’s ticket amid ongoing controversy over his membership status.

Reacting to the developments, a party official maintained that inclusion in the APC membership register remains sufficient evidence of party membership.

The official argued that once an individual’s name appears in the party register, questions regarding previous political affiliations become secondary, describing party membership as an internal matter to be determined solely by the APC.

The source further noted that political office holders who switch parties are not necessarily required to relinquish their positions before participating in their new party’s activities.

According to the official, the APC retains the authority to determine who qualifies as a member and who is eligible to contest under its platform.

The petitions are expected to be reviewed through the party’s internal dispute-resolution mechanisms as stakeholders await a final decision on the contested primaries.
