FG Weighs Plan to Embed Journalists in Military Operations

The Federal Government is considering a policy that would allow journalists to accompany military personnel on selected operations as part of efforts to improve security reporting and enhance public understanding of the nation’s security challenges.

The proposal was disclosed by the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, during the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Abuja. The minister was represented at the event by his Special Adviser, Olusanya Bankole.

According to Musa, the initiative is aimed at strengthening cooperation between the media and security agencies while promoting greater transparency in military operations. He noted that the media plays a crucial role in shaping public perception of security efforts and national stability, particularly in an age where information and narratives significantly influence modern conflicts.

The Defence Minister stressed that security management now extends beyond the battlefield, describing journalists as key stakeholders in the country’s security framework.

“More than ever before, the media are not only enablers; they are stabilisers of government,” he said.

Journalists Could Be Attached to Military Units

Musa revealed that the ministry is currently exploring mechanisms for embedding journalists with military formations during operations.

“The Defence Ministry is exploring arrangements to embed journalists with military units during operations to enable more accurate reporting and deeper understanding of operational realities,” he stated.

He explained that the proposed arrangement would foster stronger engagement between the military and the media, ensuring that information about security operations is communicated accurately and responsibly to the public.

The minister added that the success of security operations should not be measured solely by battlefield victories but also by the level of public trust in security institutions. He maintained that improved collaboration between journalists and security agencies would help combat misinformation, enhance public awareness and contribute to more effective security outcomes.

The proposal comes as Nigeria continues to confront security challenges including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across different parts of the country.
