Kogi Teacher Dies After Alleged Assault Over Pupil’s Discipline

A 22-year-old teacher, Maryam Usman, has reportedly died after she was allegedly assaulted by the father of one of her pupils following disciplinary action taken against the child at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka-Igah, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The incident reportedly began on June 17 after Maryam disciplined a pupil for misconduct. During the process, the child allegedly fell and suffered an injury to the arm.

Following the incident, the pupil’s father, identified as Ishaq Abdullahi, allegedly arrived at the teacher’s residence with two other individuals and attacked her.

According to family sources, Maryam was allegedly assaulted again the following day while on her way to a mosque. Her brother, who requested anonymity, said the second attack left her with severe injuries and unconscious.

She was initially taken to a nearby clinic before being referred to a hospital in Okpo. Despite efforts to save her life, she died on June 25, 2026.

The deceased’s family has appealed to the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

A community elder, Drisu, revealed that the teacher and the pupil’s family were related and that several reconciliation meetings had been held after the initial incident. He added that following Maryam’s death, some of her relatives allegedly vandalised the residence of the pupil’s father in anger.

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing.

Police spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said preliminary findings indicate that on June 18, Abdullahi Ishaq, accompanied by two women, allegedly went to the school and assaulted Maryam over the punishment given to his child.

According to the police, the victim sustained serious injuries, received treatment at a hospital in Ugbamaka, and was later referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo, where she eventually died on June 25.

Afusat stated that officers visited the scene and the deceased’s residence to document the case, adding that arrangements were being made to transfer the body to the General Hospital in Ankpa for an autopsy.

She disclosed that the suspects fled before police arrived, but efforts are ongoing to arrest them. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation once the suspects are apprehended.
