Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has praised the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu, saying they have contributed significantly to stabilising Nigeria’s economy and improving purchasing power.
Speaking during a media chat held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta on Saturday, the former Ogun Central senator said the administration’s reforms have produced noticeable gains over the past two and a half years.
She highlighted the relative stability of the naira as a major achievement, explaining that exchange rate predictability allows businesses to better plan imports, pricing, and revenue projections. According to her, improved economic coordination and enhanced international engagement have also strengthened trade and investment prospects.
Obasanjo further applauded the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project, describing it as a strategic infrastructure initiative that will boost commerce and reduce traffic pressure on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. She noted that the project would enhance connectivity to ports along the corridor while easing congestion in Ogun State, which serves as a key transit route to other parts of the country.
The epidemiologist also formally declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship in 2027, stressing that her ambition is genuine and not designed to pave the way for another candidate. She said she is fully committed to securing the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and succeeding Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Outlining her vision, Obasanjo said her administration would consolidate ongoing industrial growth in the state, expand agricultural value chains, and strengthen tourism development. She described Ogun as an emerging industrial hub and likened its potential to Guangdong in China, noting that increased factory presence translates into job creation, revenue generation, and economic expansion.
She also emphasised the importance of agriculture, pointing to Ogun’s proximity to Lagos and its access to ports as strategic advantages for food production and export. According to her, adding value to agricultural products would further enhance the state’s competitiveness.
In addition, Obasanjo pledged strong investment in ICT and technology education to harness digital innovation for job creation and scientific advancement.
Explaining her decision to join the APC, she said she felt at ease in the party, noting that several of her former political associates had moved there. She added that political relationships and outreach influenced her choice, as many individuals who reconnected with her after she left active politics are now members of the ruling party.
