The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed the full resumption of train operations along the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor after a disruption on Monday that left 26 passengers injured.
The corporation’s Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this on Wednesday, assuring commuters that enhanced safety and operational measures have been put in place.
In a post on his 𝕏 account, Opeifa stated that services were restored following the swift intervention of NRC personnel.
“After the incident on March 16, 2026, normal train services have been fully reinstated through prompt action by the Nigerian Railway Corporation,” he said.
He encouraged passengers to resume travel, noting that improved safety protocols now guarantee more secure and comfortable journeys.
Opeifa added that the corporation’s rapid response helped minimise disruption while reinforcing its commitment to passenger safety.
The NRC also confirmed the successful return trip of the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) from Rigasa in Kaduna State, signalling a full return to normal operations along the busy route.
He further noted that passengers were welcomed back on March 17, with support from traditional leader, Ishaq Ibrahim Tanko.
The incident occurred around 9:16 a.m. on Monday near Asham Station when a train identified as KA2 experienced a mechanical issue.
According to the NRC, after departing Rigasa and stopping at Jere, an additional rear locomotive was attached. However, the locomotive later detached while the train was in motion, rolled forward, and struck the rear section of the same train.
The corporation clarified that the situation was not a collision between two separate trains but an internal operational fault involving a detached locomotive hitting part of the train.
Opeifa emphasized that corrective safety measures have since been introduced to prevent a recurrence, reiterating the NRC’s commitment to delivering safe, reliable rail services.
