Cuba Release At Least Over 2,000 Prisoners Amid US Pressure

On Saturday morning, April 3, the Cuban government announced plans to free 2,010 prisoners, describing the move as a “humanitarian gesture” amid growing pressure from the United States.

The Cuban Embassy in the US shared the announcement on social media, framing the decision as part of Holy Week observances rather than explicitly linking it to tensions with Washington.

Authorities said the release would include foreign nationals, Cuban citizens living abroad, young people, women, and older adults. The decision was reportedly based on factors such as good behavior, time already served, the nature of the offenses, and the health conditions of the inmates.

No timeline was provided for the release, and officials did not specify the crimes committed by those affected. It remains unclear whether individuals convicted in connection with protests are included.

Although Cuban authorities reject the notion that political prisoners are held, rights group Prisoners Defended reports that over 1,200 detainees are imprisoned for political reasons.

The announcement comes as the Trump administration has intensified economic pressure on Cuba, including an effective oil blockade contributing to fuel shortages and wider economic strain.

Washington has called for political and economic reforms, though the details of these demands remain largely undisclosed. US officials have indicated that any easing of sanctions would depend on significant changes by the Cuban government.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has previously emphasized that Cuba must implement major reforms to qualify for sanctions relief, noting that the country’s economic difficulties are closely linked to its political system.
