UPDATE : 16 Killed in Coordinated Easter Attacks Across Northern Nigeria

A wave of violent attacks disrupted Easter celebrations in several northern states, leaving at least 16 people dead and many others displaced across Benue State, Kaduna State, Katsina State, and Borno State.

The assaults, blamed on suspected armed herders, terrorists, and bandits, occurred between Saturday and Sunday, raising fresh concerns about security in the region.

In Benue, gunmen reportedly attacked Mbalom, Mbatsada, and Agana communities in Gwer East LGA, killing at least 10 people and injuring several others. The нападение happened during a market day, forcing residents to flee. Local government chairman, Timothy Adi, confirmed the incident, describing it as unprovoked and calling for stronger federal intervention.

Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings, labeling them a barbaric act that threatens the peace and security of the state.

In Kaduna, suspected terrorists attacked worshippers in Ariko community, Kachia LGA, targeting churches during Easter services. At least five people were killed, while 31 others were abducted. A local councillor, Mark Bawa, said the attackers opened fire on congregants before taking victims into the bush.

Troops of the Nigerian Army later responded swiftly, engaging the attackers and successfully rescuing the abducted victims after a gun battle. The military said pressure from advancing troops forced the assailants to abandon the captives, though five bodies were recovered at the scene.

In Katsina, bandits attacked communities in Musawa and Matazu LGAs, killing a police officer after ambushing a station, looting shops, and damaging a healthcare facility. Governor Dikko Radda visited the area and ordered increased security deployment.

Meanwhile, in Borno, suspected Boko Haram fighters attacked Awapul community in Chibok LGA in the early hours of Sunday, burning homes and shops and forcing residents to flee. Police spokesperson Nahum Daso confirmed the нападение, noting that while there were no reported casualties, properties were destroyed.

Residents said the attackers, who arrived on motorcycles, operated for over an hour before retreating. The incident followed earlier attacks in Damasak and Nganzai, where security forces repelled militants using heavy weapons.

Authorities have since intensified operations across the affected areas, as residents continue to demand stronger security presence to curb the rising violence.
