The Federal Government has approved a major increase in allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants, in a bid to improve earnings and boost morale across the public service.
The announcement was made in Abuja on Friday by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, during a briefing where she outlined recent reforms approved by the Federal Executive Council.
According to her, the review covers workers under both the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), ensuring wide coverage across different categories of federal employees.
She explained that the updated “peculiar allowances” have been adjusted across all grade levels, leading to improved earnings for both junior and senior staff.
The government also approved increases in key benefits such as duty tour allowance (DTA), estacode, and book allowances, noting that most allowances under the Public Service Rules have now been revised.
A key feature of the reform is the introduction of a 100 percent Duty Tour Allowance for civil servants attending approved training programmes, even when no travel is involved.
“Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” Walson-Jack said.
In addition to salary-related adjustments, the government introduced a new retirement benefit package under the Contributory Pension Scheme, granting retiring civil servants 100 percent of their annual emoluments as an exit benefit, effective January 1, 2026.
She said the measure is aimed at ensuring dignity and financial security for retirees.
The government also confirmed the rollout of an Employee Compensation Scheme to provide support for workers who suffer injuries or death in the course of duty.
The reforms come amid ongoing labour concerns over rising living costs, with analysts suggesting the new measures could improve worker welfare and productivity across the public sector.
