The stars that will miss the World Cup through injury – and who might {FULL LIST}

Spain: Lamine Yamal, Mikel Merino

Yamal is “expected to be available for the World Cup” according to Barcelona despite being ruled out of the rest of the season with a hamstring injury. 

Merino had surgery on his right foot in February and hasn’t returned for Arsenal since. Boss Mikel Arteta recently couldn’t answer whether he would return before the end of the season. 

Egypt: Mohamed Salah

Salah was forced off with a suspected hamstring injury last weekend and could have played his last game for Liverpool.

Germany: Serge Gnabry, Marc-Andre ter Stegen 

Gnabry said he would be “supporting the boys from home” after being ruled out of the tournament with an adductor muscle tear in his right leg.

Goalkeeper Ter Stegen suffered a serious hamstring injury in February and is a doubt.

Brazil: Rodrygo, Estevao, Eder Militao

Rodrygo suffered an ACL injury in March playing for Real Madrid and faces a long road to recovery. 

Estevao sustained a hamstring injury in April and is in a race to be fit. 

Eder Militao will miss the World Cup with a hamstring injury that needs surgery.

Argentina: Cristian Romero 

Tottenham captain Romero was ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury in April. Scans revealed a tear of his medial cruciate ligament and his World Cup hopes hang in the balance.  

France: Hugo Ekitike, Kylian Mbappe

Ekitike ruptured his Achilles tendon in April while playing for Liverpool and is not expected to return until 2027.

Real Madrid have confirmed that Mbappe has suffered a hamstring injury but reports say the forward is targeting a return against Barcelona on May 10.

Ghana: Mohammed Kudus 

Kudus’ involvement is in doubt after suffering a setback in his return from a thigh injury that could require surgery. 

England: Reece James 

James sustained his 10th hamstring injury since December 2020 in March and is a doubt to be a part of Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Croatia: Luka Modric

Modric will undergo ‌surgery for a fractured left cheekbone just weeks ​before the AC Milan midfielder is due to participate in his fifth World ​Cup.

Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic is “convinced” and “confident” that the 40-year-old will be ready for the World Cup. It may mean Modric could wear a protective mask if he faces  England on June 11 in the Group L opener.

Turkey: Arda Guler

Guler is likely to miss the rest of Real Madrid’s season with a hamstring injury that he suffered last weekend, throwing his involvement this summer into doubt.

Netherlands: Xavi Simons

Tottenham playmaker sustained an ACL injury on the weekend and will miss the tournament.
