New Jersey Transit has announced that a return train ticket from New York City to the MetLife Stadium will cost $150 (£110) for fans attending World Cup matches.
The normal price for the 18-mile round trip is $12.90 (£9.50), and it takes about 15 minutes each way.
Fans who take a shuttle bus instead of the train will have to pay $80 (£59) for a return ticket.
There will be eight games at the stadium, including the final, and group games featuring Brazil, France, Germany and England.
There will be no parking at the stadium, which is almost impossible to get to on foot because the roads do not have pavements.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill says FIFA is not contributing towards the transport costs despite “making $11 billion” from the World Cup.
FIFA have been contacted for comment.
It should be noted that not all host cities are raising prices. There will be no fare rises or special cheap or free fares at Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.
Sherrill said: “New Jersey is ready and excited to host eight FIFA World Cup matches this summer – including the World Cup Final.
“Since I took office, my Administration has been working to prepare for the biggest sporting event our state has ever seen – and today, NJ TRANSIT released their Mobility Plan to move 40,000 fans to and from each match safely and efficiently.
“In the FIFA World Cup agreement that my Administration inherited, FIFA put zero dollars towards transporting World Cup fans. It also eliminated parking at MetLife Stadium, putting the burden of transporting four times more matchday riders than typical for an event at the stadium on NJ TRANSIT.
“This agreement will cost NJ TRANSIT at least $48 million, while FIFA is positioned to make $11 billion during the World Cup.
“As I have said repeatedly, FIFA should cover the cost of transporting its fans. If it won’t, we will not be subsidizing World Cup ticket holders on the backs of New Jerseyans who rely on NJ TRANSIT every day.”
FIFA president confirms Iran will participate at World Cup
FIFA president Gianni Infantino says that Iran will “for sure” take part in the World Cup this year.
Speaking at CNBC’s Invest in America Forum, Infantino stressed the importance of Iran’s involvement, which had been uncertain due to the Middle East crisis.
“The Iranian team is coming for sure, yes. We hope that by then, of course, the situation will be a peaceful situation. As I said, that would definitely help. But Iran has to come. Of course, they represent their people. They have qualified. The players want to play.
“I went to see them. They are actually quite a good team as well,” he remarked. “And they really want to play and they should play. Sports should be outside of politics now.
“OK we don’t live on the moon, we live on planet earth. But you know if there is nobody else that believes in building bridges and in keeping them, you know, in tact and together, well we are doing that job.”
