The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has announced his decision to leave the party and join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), citing internal disagreements and a departure from the party’s founding principles.
Naija News reports that Baba-Ahmed made the disclosure on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s political programme, Politics Today.
He said his decision was influenced by unresolved issues within the Labour Party, which he believes has shifted away from its original vision.
According to him, “I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow. The party is no longer what it used to be. What it once stood for has changed due to internal developments.”
He added that his exit would take effect at midnight, after which he would officially align with the PRP.
“I am leaving the Labour Party at midnight and joining the PRP. It is a party with history, about 75 years old,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed also noted that his departure follows what he described as strained relations within the party, which affected its cohesion and direction.
His move comes despite earlier assurances that he would remain in the Labour Party and calls for his former running mate, Peter Obi, to return to the party if he failed to secure a presidential ticket under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
