The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says there is currently no confirmed case of Hantavirus in Nigeria despite increased global attention surrounding a recent outbreak linked to an international cruise ship.
Director-General of the agency, Jide Idris, disclosed this in a public health advisory, noting that although the risk of the disease spreading to Nigeria remains low, the agency has intensified surveillance efforts due to ongoing global developments.
According to him, the reported outbreak involves a limited number of confirmed and suspected infections associated with the cruise ship, while health authorities in affected countries continue investigations and contact tracing.
Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through rodents. Infection can occur when people come into contact with contaminated rodents, their urine, droppings, saliva or dust particles.
The agency explained that early symptoms may include fever and gastrointestinal illness, while severe cases can result in breathing difficulties and other serious health complications. Although the disease can be dangerous, it is considered relatively uncommon.
Health officials also noted that the current international cluster has been linked to the Andes virus strain, which in rare situations may spread between humans through very close contact.
Dr Idris reiterated that Nigeria has not recorded any case of the virus and assured that the NCDC would continue monitoring the global situation while strengthening surveillance systems to quickly detect any imported infection.
The agency added that additional precautionary measures have already been activated to prevent the possible entry and spread of the disease in the country.
Nigerians were advised to remain vigilant and observe preventive measures such as maintaining clean surroundings, storing food properly, disposing waste appropriately and avoiding contact with rodents and their droppings.
The NCDC also encouraged regular hand washing and safe cleaning practices in environments where rodents may be present.
