VAR Explains Decision To Disallow West Ham’s Late Equaliser Against Arsenal

Premier League officials have explained why West Ham United’s late equaliser against Arsenal was ruled out after a dramatic VAR review involving goalkeeper David Raya.

The tense London clash appeared headed for a dramatic finish when West Ham believed they had secured a late equaliser deep into stoppage time. However, celebrations were halted after VAR official Darren England advised referee Chris Kavanagh to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor.

Earlier in the match, Leandro Trossard had given Arsenal the lead in the 83rd minute, handing Mikel Arteta’s side a crucial advantage that ultimately proved decisive.

Following the VAR review, Kavanagh ruled that a West Ham player had fouled Raya during the build-up to the goal. As a result, the equaliser was disallowed and a direct free kick awarded to Arsenal.

In an official explanation released after the match, Premier League authorities confirmed the decision.

“After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of a goal to West Ham United,” the statement noted.

The referee also announced: “After review, West Ham number 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper. Final decision is a direct free kick.”

The victory significantly boosts Arsenal’s title ambitions, extending their lead over Manchester City to five points.

Meanwhile, the defeat leaves West Ham in deeper trouble near the relegation zone, with the club now sitting one point behind Tottenham Hotspur despite having played an extra game.

West Ham also face difficult upcoming fixtures against Newcastle United and Leeds United as the battle to avoid relegation intensifies.
