Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has stated that she is not abandoning advocacy but rather extending it into the political arena.
Naija News reports that Yesufu recently left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and teamed up with former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), while also revealing her intention to run for the Senate.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Yesufu explained her decision to actively participate in partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to her, joining politics will not stop her from speaking up for citizens and demanding accountability from leaders.
“I must say that we are all politicians. I simply decided to become partisan by joining a political party,” she said.
She added, “For me, I am not leaving advocacy behind; I am taking advocacy into politics. Some people may dismiss that as mere words, but I have remained consistent for over a decade in the public space.
“From the moment I chose to start demanding accountability and advocating for change, I have stayed true to those principles across three different administrations.
“It is unfair that activists and advocates are constantly singled out. We have seen activists serve in government before, and many of them performed well.”
