Nigerians Set To Enjoy Improved Electricity Supply As National Grid Receives Major Upgrade

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced the addition of 600 megawatts to the national grid following the completion of a major transmission infrastructure project in Edo State.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, made the disclosure on Thursday during the commissioning of the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV Turn-In-Turn-Out Transmission Line Project.

According to Abdulaziz, the project represents another significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s electricity transmission network and improving the evacuation of bulk power from the Ihovbor Transmission Substation to distribution centres nationwide.

He explained that the project involved connecting the existing Benin/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission line to the Ihovbor Transmission Substation, creating two additional transmission routes spanning a combined distance of 14 kilometres.

“With the completion of this strategic project, operational flexibility within the transmission network has been enhanced, while power delivery in the Benin corridor has become more reliable through the new connection to the power plant,” Abdulaziz stated.

The TCN boss noted that the development would enable the company to evacuate electricity more efficiently from the Azura Power plant and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company facility.

He added that the project would help reduce transmission bottlenecks, improve grid reliability, and provide distribution companies with greater access to bulk electricity for consumers across the country.

According to him, the newly upgraded grid system will also make it easier for electricity generated from the Benin axis to be transmitted to other parts of Nigeria.

Abdulaziz further described the initiative as part of TCN’s broader commitment to innovation, collaboration, and the development of a more efficient national transmission network.

He stated that the project would significantly improve power evacuation capacity, ensuring that more generated electricity reaches consumers and ultimately leading to better electricity supply for Nigerians nationwide.
