2027: ADC Woos Kwankwaso, Dismisses Presidential Ticket Talk

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified consultations with key opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections, while making it clear that it will not guarantee any aspirant the presidential or vice-presidential ticket.

Party sources disclosed that the ADC has set up a high-level committee tasked with engaging influential politicians across various opposition parties to strengthen collaboration nationwide before the polls. According to a senior party official who spoke anonymously, the committee’s mandate is broad and not focused on any single party or individual.

The move comes amid reports that the ADC is courting the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to join its platform. Kwankwaso had recently stated in Kano that he was open to working with any opposition coalition willing to offer him either the presidential or vice-presidential slot, outlining conditions for any possible alliance.

Confirming ongoing engagements, an ADC source said the party had established discreet structures to manage discussions. “We are maintaining open channels with all parties and stakeholders. This is not targeted at any individual,” the source said.

Another senior party insider revealed that ADC National Chairman, David Mark, had already communicated to the Kwankwaso camp that the party leadership could not promise either the presidential or vice-presidential ticket to anyone. “It was made clear that no such guarantees would be given,” the source said.

Recall that the ADC emerged in July 2025 as the coalition platform adopted by opposition leaders seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Since then, under Mark as National Chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, the party has focused on strengthening its national structures and boosting public confidence.

Several prominent opposition figures have since joined the ADC, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi in July, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in November, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi on December 31.

Party insiders said the ADC leadership is exploring an inclusive government model that would accommodate Kwankwaso and his supporters through strategic appointments rather than ticket assurances. “The party is interested in Kwankwaso, but it will not proceed on false assumptions,” a source noted, adding that discussions centre on a broad-based cabinet and equitable distribution of positions.

Another party leader disclosed that while ticket guarantees are off the table, Mark is expected to personally engage Kwankwaso to explore alternative arrangements. These may include negotiations around ministerial slots, National Assembly leadership roles, and other key government positions.

Despite the firm stance on tickets, ADC leaders remain hopeful that Kwankwaso will eventually align with the party to mount a strong challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

When contacted, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi declined to comment on the reported committee but reaffirmed the party’s commitment to expanding its membership. “The ADC is here to stay, and we are determined to grow our base and remove the APC government,” he said.

Meanwhile, NNPP Publicity Secretary Oladipo Johnson confirmed that Kwankwaso and the party were engaged in consultations with various political groups but declined to name the ADC. “Discussions are ongoing with relevant stakeholders across the country. At the appropriate time, our position will be made public,” he said.
