Abdul Samad Rabiu Promises Over $1.5m in Bonuses as Super Eagles Defeat Algeria, Reach AFCON Semis

Nigeria’s push for glory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) received a major boost on Friday, January 10, after billionaire businessman Abdul Samad Rabiu announced a substantial financial incentive for the Super Eagles following their convincing quarter-final victory over Algeria.

Shortly after Nigeria’s 2–0 triumph secured a semi-final berth, Rabiu unveiled a multi-million-dollar bonus package designed to motivate the team toward lifting the trophy.

Taking to 𝕏, he congratulated the players for their impressive performance, noting that their victory had lifted the nation’s morale. He pledged $500,000 if the team wins the semi-final, with an extra $50,000 for every goal scored. Rabiu added that should the Super Eagles go on to win the final, he would reward them with an additional $1 million, plus $100,000 for each goal scored in the final match.

The pledge followed a dominant display by the Super Eagles, who overwhelmed Algeria to book a place in the last four of the tournament.

Nigeria opened the scoring just two minutes into the second half when Victor Osimhen powered home a close-range header from a well-delivered Bruno Onyemaechi cross. The pressure continued, and in the 57th minute, Osimhen turned provider, setting up Akor Adams, who calmly beat the goalkeeper to make it 2–0.

Despite Algeria’s attempts to mount a comeback, Nigeria’s solid defensive organisation and control of the game proved too much. The Super Eagles dictated the tempo and remained composed even as the North Africans made substitutions in search of a response.

With the win, Nigeria advances to the AFCON semi-finals, where they will face tournament hosts Morocco in a much-anticipated showdown on Wednesday, January 14.
