Bukayo Saka, the Arsenal F.C. and England national football team winger, has sparked reactions online after revealing that he had never heard of global music legend Celine Dion during a lighthearted conversation with Nigerian Grammy-winning singer Tems.
The moment occurred during a relaxed discussion on “The Link Up,” a new show produced by Arsenal Football Club.
While chatting about music influences, Saka asked Tems about the artists who inspired her growing up.
“You said you were nine when you started singing. Did you have any idols or singers you loved?” Saka asked.
Tems replied that she admired Celine Dion, prompting a surprised reaction from the football star.
“I don’t know who that is,” Saka said, laughing.
Clearly shocked but amused, Tems responded, “You don’t know who Celine Dion is? Oh my gosh.”
The exchange quickly circulated on social media, with fans expressing surprise that the 2001-born footballer was unfamiliar with the iconic Canadian singer.
Saka, who often listens to contemporary music, is known to enjoy Afrobeats, hip-hop and R&B, including songs from artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid and Drake. He also confirmed during the interview that he enjoys Tems’ music and considers music an important part of his routine and motivation.
Celine Dion rose to global prominence in the 1990s and early 2000s with hits like My Heart Will Go On and Because You Loved Me—years before Saka was born. The Canadian star has sold more than 200 million records worldwide and remains one of the most successful music artists in history.
