‘Be Professional’ – IGP Charges Newly Promoted Police Chiefs

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has urged newly elevated Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) to uphold the highest standards of professionalism in their duties.

Disu gave the directive on Monday during a decoration ceremony held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

He emphasised that the promotions should be seen as a call to greater responsibility rather than a reward, stressing the need for accountability at all levels.

The IGP warned that indiscipline, corruption, abuse of office, and negligence would not be tolerated under their leadership, urging them to ensure policing within their jurisdictions is guided by professionalism, respect for human rights, and responsiveness to citizens.

Describing the ceremony as more than symbolic, Disu noted that it represents a strategic effort to strengthen leadership within the police force at a critical time.

While congratulating the officers, he stated that although the promotions were earned through years of service and discipline, they come with increased expectations, requiring integrity, adherence to the rule of law, and exemplary conduct.

He further made it clear that senior officers would be held accountable not only for operational performance but also for the behaviour of personnel under their command.

Reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to community-focused policing, Disu encouraged the officers to adopt innovation, improve efficiency, and discard outdated practices that do not align with modern policing standards.

He also announced that all newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and AIGs will participate in a mandatory strategic leadership retreat beginning March 24, 2026. The programme, organised by the Police Reform Secretariat in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is aimed at enhancing leadership capacity and promoting modern policing practices.

Additionally, the IGP urged senior officers to prioritise mentorship by nurturing talent and guiding junior officers to maintain professional standards.

He assured personnel that promotions within the force would continue to be based on merit, performance, and integrity, while also appreciating the support of Bola Tinubu and the role of the Police Service Commission in ensuring transparency in the promotion process.
