Bayelsa United’s team bus was involved in a frightening incident on the Abuja road while travelling to Kano State for their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 22 clash against Barau FC.
According to reports, one of the tyres detached while the bus was in motion, triggering panic among the players and officials onboard. However, the driver reportedly managed to regain control of the vehicle, preventing a more serious outcome.
No casualties were recorded, and all members of the Bayelsa United contingent are said to be safe, with no serious injuries sustained.
As of the time of reporting, club officials have not announced alternative travel arrangements or explained how the incident may affect the team’s match preparations.
The incident recalls a tragic road accident reported by SaharaReporters in June 2025, when 22 members of the Kano State contingent lost their lives after their team bus crashed while returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Athletes, coaches, officials, medical personnel, and a journalist were among those killed when the bus veered off the road and overturned near Dakatsalle, about 40 kilometres from Kano.
Nine others were injured in that crash, while one passenger escaped unhurt. The team had been on a return journey of more than 1,000 kilometres following the conclusion of the festival.
Reacting at the time, Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, described the incident as “a very sad day for Nigerian sports,” adding that the nation was heartbroken by the tragedy.
