The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has announced that the next local government elections in the state will hold in January 2027.
According to Naija News, the commission has fixed Saturday, January 16, 2027, for the polls, which will be conducted across all polling units in the state’s 33 local government areas.
Voting on election day is scheduled to commence at 8:00 a.m. and close at 3:00 p.m.
The decision was reached during OYSIEC’s first management meeting held at its headquarters in Agodi, Ibadan. The meeting was chaired by the commission’s chairman, Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi, and centred on planning strategies for the successful conduct of the council elections.
OYSIEC disclosed that political campaigns will officially end at midnight on Friday, January 15, 2027.
It added that any supplementary or re-run election, if required, would be held on Saturday, January 23, 2027.
The commission also noted that the tenure of the current chairmen and councillors in the 33 local government councils is expected to expire on May 23, 2027, in accordance with the state’s existing local government law.
OYSIEC said the announcement was made in line with its statutory powers under relevant provisions of the Electoral Act and the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission Law, which empower it to give early notice of elections.
The commission urged political parties, candidates, security agencies and other stakeholders to cooperate with it to ensure a smooth and credible local government election in January 2027.
