Carrick Demands Strong Reaction After Newcastle Defeat

Michael Carrick has urged his Manchester United players to bounce back quickly after their 2–1 loss to Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The defeat proved frustrating for United, who were unable to capitalize on their numerical advantage after Newcastle were reduced to 10 men. Carrick admitted he was disappointed not only with the result but also with how the game unfolded.

“We are bitterly disappointed. It hurts,” Carrick said, noting that his side arrived in good form but failed to deliver the expected performance.

The loss halted an impressive run since Carrick assumed managerial duties at Old Trafford following the exit of Ruben Amorim. Under Carrick, United had previously recorded six wins and a draw in his first seven matches.

Despite those results, some recent performances have been less convincing. United needed a stoppage-time strike from Benjamin Sesko to salvage a draw against West Ham United, while the striker’s goal also secured a narrow win over Everton F.C.. Their comeback victory against Crystal Palace F.C. was aided by a penalty and red card won by Matheus Cunha.

Injuries have also taken a toll on the squad, with Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount, Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu unavailable for the trip to Newcastle. Meanwhile, Casemiro and Luke Shaw were substituted after showing signs of fatigue.

Newcastle sealed the victory through William Osula, who beat Tyrell Malacia before scoring the decisive goal.

Despite the setback, Manchester United remain third in the Premier League table as they continue their push to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Carrick emphasized the importance of learning from the defeat ahead of their next league fixture against Aston Villa F.C. at Old Trafford on March 15.

He added that while the team must analyse what went wrong, they should also remain focused on the bigger picture and the opportunities still ahead this season.
