Speculation about the future of Éric Chelle has been dismissed by the Super Eagles camp, with the team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, rejecting reports linking the coach to Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca.
The rumours began after a report by Moroccan television outlet Le7TV claimed that the Malian tactician was close to finalising a deal with the club and was set to replace current manager Amine Benhachem.
Efoghe, however, dismissed the claim, describing it as false and stressing that Chelle remains fully committed to his role with the Nigerian national team.
“Good day friends and colleagues. Kindly ignore this story. It is fake news,” the media officer wrote in the Super Eagles’ official media WhatsApp group on March 9.
The 48-year-old coach has drawn interest from clubs and national teams across Africa and Europe following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the speculation, Chelle is still under contract with the Nigeria Football Federation until January 2027.
The coach himself recently addressed the rumours, including reports linking him with French club Olympique de Marseille.
“At the moment we’re speaking, I am still the coach of Nigeria,” Chelle said during an interview with histoiresdefootpodcast.
“I still have one year left on my contract. In fact, just yesterday I held a video meeting with my technical staff to work on the squad list for the March matches. So yes, I remain the coach of Nigeria.”
