FIFA Probes Spanish FA Over Anti-Muslim Chants in Egypt Friendly

World football governing body FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against the Royal Spanish Football Federation following anti-Muslim chants during a recent international friendly between Spain and Egypt.

The incident occurred on March 31 at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, where a section of supporters reportedly chanted, “Whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim.”

Confirming the development, FIFA told AFP that disciplinary action had been initiated over the events during the match.

The episode adds to a series of controversies that have plagued Spanish football in recent years, including repeated racist abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior of Real Madrid.

Authorities have also taken action locally. Spanish police recently announced an investigation into what they described as “Islamophobic and xenophobic” chants. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned the behaviour as “unacceptable,” stressing that a small, uncivil minority should not define the country.

The Spanish federation has equally denounced the chants, while Spain forward Lamine Yamal—who is Muslim and featured in the match—criticised the behaviour, describing it as disrespectful and reflective of ignorance and racism.
