Fubara Impeachment Proceedings Progressing as Planned – Rivers Assembly

The Rivers State House of Assembly has affirmed that the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu, are progressing as planned.

This was disclosed on Friday by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, in an official statement.

George explained that the impeachment move is being carried out strictly in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

He noted that two separate notices alleging gross misconduct, initiated under Section 188 of the Constitution against both the Governor and the Deputy Governor, have been formally transmitted to them by the Speaker of the House, and the Assembly is currently awaiting their responses.

According to him, the Constitution empowers the House of Assembly to act in the interest of the people by checking constitutional violations by the Governor, Deputy Governor, or any other official of the Rivers State Government, stressing that lawmakers remain obligated to discharge this responsibility.

George further stated that the Assembly is aware of attempts by certain individuals and media outlets to mislead the public by falsely claiming that the impeachment process has been suspended or abandoned, describing such narratives as deliberate efforts to sow discord between the House and the public.

He urged the public, with the permission of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, DSSRS, to disregard such misinformation, adding that the Assembly will not be deterred by intimidation, blackmail, or threats from those opposed to democratic principles.

The statement concluded by appreciating the people of Rivers State for their prayers and support, while also thanking stakeholders and leaders at all levels. It extended goodwill to all democrats committed to the Nigerian project and prayed for continued blessings upon Rivers State and Nigeria.
