Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, has said she does not need the backing of her father to pursue her political ambition as she seeks to become governor of Ogun State.

Recall that Iyabo made the remark while speaking during an interview on Channels Television, where she discussed her decision to join the race for the state’s top political office.

She said her choice to contest the governorship election was made on her own and was not tied to the approval of her father.

According to her, she has reached a point in life where she can take decisions about her career and political journey without depending on anyone.

Iyabo said she is already close to 60 years old and believes she is old enough to determine her own path.

She also spoke about her family and expressed gratitude that both her parents are still alive.

Iyabo said many people around her age no longer have the chance to still have both father and mother living, which makes her appreciate the situation she finds herself in.

The governorship aspirant said what she expects from her parents is simply their vote and nothing more.

She explained that her political ambition is her personal decision and that she is prepared to pursue it independently while remaining thankful for the support and presence of her family.

According to her, “I don’t need his support; I’m almost 60. As you’re looking at me now, I’m 59, so I think that at this age, and I tell people at my age, my friends that still have both parents alive are very few. So I consider myself lucky at this age to have both my mother and father alive, and I don’t think at this age, I should be consulting them for everything with my career move. So what I’ve said I know, and my mother will vote for me; that’s all I ask of them.”
