Veteran Nigerian actor, Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known as Papa Ajasco, has opened up about the struggles he has faced despite the fame that came with portraying the iconic character.
Ayoyinka is widely recognised for his role in the popular Nigerian comedy series Papa Ajasco & Company, produced by Wale Adenuga through Wale Adenuga Productions.
In a recent interview with media personality Lucky Udu, the actor revealed that ownership of the Papa Ajasco character has limited his ability to pursue personal projects and commercial opportunities outside the well-known comedy franchise.
According to him, he does not have exclusive rights to use the character’s name or costume, as they are legally owned by the production company. As a result, he cannot freely appear in advertisements or brand promotions using the persona that made him famous, even when companies specifically request the character.
Ayoyinka explained that the restriction has made it difficult for him to benefit fully from the popularity of the role.
“The major problem is that the character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. Anyone who wants to work with me usually wants me in that character, with the full costume and appearance, but it’s not easy for me because I don’t have the right to use it,” he said.
“I can’t even use the name Papa Ajasco unless I seek permission, and I also can’t wear the costume. The character is very strong, and people want to see me dressed and looking exactly like Papa Ajasco, which makes things difficult for me.”
The actor also revealed that before retiring about five years ago, he worked with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Despite his long career and widespread recognition, Ayoyinka admitted that life has been challenging in recent years.
He said that since retiring, it has been difficult for him to connect with opportunities, adding that he continues to worry about his situation as he does not own a house or a car.
