President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his unwavering belief in democracy.
The Nigerian leader made the remark on Wednesday while addressing leaders of the All Progressives Congress and members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council at the State House in Abuja.
Speaking about his political journey, Tinubu recalled that he once remained in the opposition without issuing threats, even during difficult political periods.
According to him, “When circumstances were not in my favour years ago, I respected the process and stayed in opposition without threatening anyone except the military junta.”
The President reiterated his strong commitment to democratic ideals, national unity, and adherence to the rule of law, describing himself as a steadfast supporter of democracy who will continue to defend Nigeria’s democratic system.
He expressed satisfaction that political leaders in the country share democratic values and have continued to support the system voluntarily over the past 26 years.
Tinubu emphasised that his belief in democracy remains firm and central to his political philosophy.
“I am a die-hard democrat and fully committed to that belief, as well as to a united Nigeria. That principle will remain with me throughout my life,” he said.
The President also stressed that the rule of law must always guide democratic governance, noting that disagreements should be resolved through dialogue and intellectual engagement rather than threats.
“In any democracy, the rule of law must prevail. The majority will have their way, while the minority will still have the opportunity to express their views, even if they do not prevail. That is the beauty of democracy,” he stated.
Tinubu added that while he remains loyal to his political platform, he respects the right of others to belong to different parties within Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system.
“As a registered voter, I will remain committed to the platform I belong to, whether or not others share the same political affiliation,” he said.
