James Milner Sets New Premier League Appearance Record In Brighton’s Brentford Fixture

James Milner has further cemented his legacy in English football after breaking the Premier League appearance record during Brighton & Hove Albion F.C.’s clash against Brentford F.C. at the Gtech Community Stadium on February 21.

The 40-year-old midfielder started the encounter, marking his 654th appearance in the English top flight and surpassing the previous record held by Gareth Barry. Milner had equalled Barry’s tally earlier in the week during Brighton’s trip to Aston Villa F.C., one of his former teams.

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler lauded Milner’s professionalism, describing him as a role model both on and off the field. He attributed the milestone to the veteran’s discipline, daily commitment, and relentless drive for improvement.

Milner began his professional journey with Leeds United F.C. in 2002 as a teenager. Over the years, he also featured for Newcastle United F.C., Aston Villa, Manchester City F.C., and Liverpool F.C., building a career defined by consistency and professionalism.

Former England teammate Wayne Rooney praised Milner’s achievement, saying the record reflects years of dedication and hard work. Rooney noted that modern players are extending their careers, referencing Cristiano Ronaldo as another example of longevity at the highest level.

Pundits Chris Sutton and Sam Parkin also commended Milner, highlighting his remarkable durability and recalling his professionalism even during his early loan spell at Swindon.

Milner, a three-time Premier League champion who has also lifted the FA Cup, League Cup, and the UEFA Champions League, remains contracted to Brighton until the end of the current season.
