Former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, is reportedly weighing a move into elective politics following his recent departure from office, with indications that he may contest the Ogun West Senatorial District seat.
Sources cited by Sahara Reporters revealed that Egbetokun has remained at the official IGP residence while holding consultations aimed at securing a senatorial ticket in Ogun State.
A senior police source disclosed that the ex-police chief is strategising a return to public service through the ballot.
“Egbetokun has stayed at the police IG house and is working towards emerging as the senatorial candidate for his Ogun West Senatorial District,” the source reportedly said.
Available records show that Egbetokun is from Erinja in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, which falls within the Ogun West Senatorial District.
President Bola Tinubu had on February 24 directed Egbetokun to step down as Inspector-General of Police. He was subsequently succeeded by Tunji Disu, who previously led the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.
Egbetokun’s tenure was marked by controversy, particularly over the extension of his service beyond the statutory retirement age of 60 years or 35 years in service, a development that drew criticism from civil society organisations and other stakeholders who argued it conflicted with existing police regulations.
