Lagos Government Announces 18-Week Maintenance on Mazamaza Bridge

The Lagos State Government has announced an 18-week maintenance programme for the Mazamaza Bridge on the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, ahead of its planned demolition and reconstruction for the Blue Line Rail Phase 2 extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.

In a statement by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the maintenance will commence on Monday, January 19, 2026, and will affect both the Toll and Service Lanes in both directions. The works will focus on expansion joints and other key structural components of the bridge.

Osiyemi assured motorists that the bridge will remain partially open throughout the period, with traffic managed through diversions across the Toll, BRT, and Service Lanes to minimise disruption.

“The Lagos State Government has released a traffic diversion plan for maintenance works on the expansion joints and bridge elements of Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos–Badagry corridor, inbound and outbound, from Monday, January 19, 2026, to Thursday, May 28, 2026,” the statement said.

According to the schedule, preparatory activities will take place from January 24 to 30. Phases one to four, running from January 31 to March 30, will focus on repairs on the Badagry-bound lanes, while phases five to eight, from March 31 to June 2, will cover the Lagos-bound lanes.

Motorists should expect lane restrictions throughout the maintenance period, which will run until late May 2026.

The government also outlined temporary traffic arrangements, with diversions alternating between the BRT and Toll Lanes during different phases of the work. Service Lane repairs will temporarily reduce traffic to a single lane before full access is restored. Similar measures will apply to both directions of travel.

Drivers have been advised to comply with traffic signs and follow directives from officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow during the maintenance.

The maintenance comes ahead of plans to rebuild the Mazamaza Bridge. In December 2024, the Director of Rail Transport at the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Olasunkanmi Okusaga, revealed that structural assessments showed the bridge lacked the capacity to support rail operations. The new bridge, he said, will be built to international standards, supported by 66 piers and designed to last at least 75 years.
