Veteran journalist, Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, has officially announced her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
In an open letter dated February 26, 2026, Sarafa-Yusuf said her decision came after extensive consultations and careful consideration. She described herself as a steady and dependable choice, noting that if elected to succeed Dapo Abiodun, her administration would prioritise stability, unity, and institutional harmony.
“I am putting myself forward as the safest option,” she wrote.
According to her, she brings vast experience in navigating government institutions and processes, enjoys broad acceptance across Ogun’s diverse communities, and remains composed under pressure.
Highlighting her relationship with the incumbent governor, Sarafa-Yusuf stressed the importance of continuity rather than conflict.
“I have maintained a cordial and respectful relationship with the outgoing governor — the leader of our party. That is because continuity matters. Order matters. Transitions matter,” she stated.
Addressing the ongoing debate over zoning the Ogun governorship seat — particularly calls for the position to shift to Ogun West — she cautioned against what she termed “unmanaged grievance.”
“Our responsibility is not to take sides emotionally, but to ensure zoning does not become a destabilising tool. Ogun needs inclusion without escalation,” she said.
Sarafa-Yusuf also recalled her previous governorship ambition in 2022, when she failed to secure her party’s ticket. She explained that despite the setback, she remained committed to the party and the broader system.
“I did not disrupt the system. I accepted the outcome, maintained relationships, and stayed involved,” she noted.
Acknowledging the historic challenge before her, she pointed out that Nigeria has yet to elect a female governor, but maintained that her candidacy is anchored on competence rather than gender symbolism.
“Nigeria has never elected a female governor, and I understand the significance of breaking that barrier,” she said, adding that her ambition “is not about symbolism, but about capability and competence.”
If elected, she pledged to deliver result-driven governance, strengthen Ogun’s industrial base, empower young people, modernise infrastructure, and rebuild trust between the government and citizens.
“I believe Ogun State is prepared for a future founded on balance, unity, and effective leadership. I am ready to serve,” she affirmed.
