The Federal Government has been cautioned that the prevalence of multiple taxation is negatively affecting businesses—particularly in the private sector—while placing an increasing financial burden on consumers.
Stakeholders have therefore called on the government to urgently harmonise taxes, especially those impacting private enterprises. It was noted that federal, state and local authorities often impose levies on the same goods and services, driving up production and operating costs that are ultimately passed on to consumers.
These concerns were raised by the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Pomegranate Nigeria Limited (PNL), a third-party logistics firm, Mr. Wole Elusakin, during the company’s management budget session and retreat held in Abeokuta on Friday.
Elusakin warned that many businesses could be forced to shut down if decisive action is not taken. According to him, logistics operators face repeated charges across different states and local councils.
“We grapple with multiple billings because every state or local government our trucks pass through imposes charges. There is an urgent need for the Federal Government to step in and harmonise these taxes. All such costs are eventually transferred to our clients and, ultimately, to consumers, increasing the financial pressure on them,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the newly introduced tax laws would help resolve the issue but urged the Federal Government to improve public communication around the reforms.
“We expect clearer and more effective communication from the Federal Government so businesses can better understand how the policies will affect operations,” Elusakin added.
Speaking on the company’s retreat and its 2026 theme, “Impossible Is Nothing,” Elusakin explained that the annual budget session typically includes a retreat focused on strategy and team bonding.
“This year’s bonding session brought us to Abeokuta, where we visited the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, the Wildlife Park, and Olumo Rock for a mountain-climbing experience,” he said.
On the theme, he noted that it reflects the belief that all set targets are achievable as a team, adding that staff had already embraced the mindset.
Meanwhile, PNL’s Head of Finance, Mrs. Dorothy Okunoye, who emerged as Manager of the Year, described the recognition as unexpected. She thanked management and colleagues for their support and pledged continued dedication to surpassing set goals in the year ahead.
The event also featured interactive discussions between actor Odunlade Adekola and PNL management, during which Elusakin announced that Pomegranate Nigeria Limited would soon unveil PNLHub, a cargo-hailing ride platform.
