The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newly married woman over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who reportedly died after eating a meal she prepared.
The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
Confirming the development in a statement issued in Dutse on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the deceased had eaten lunch at home before suddenly falling critically ill.
He was rushed to a hospital for treatment but was confirmed dead while receiving medical attention.
Following the incident, detectives from the Jahun Division launched an investigation and arrested the deceased’s wife as the main suspect.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspect confessed during interrogation that she poisoned her husband’s food with rat poison, adding that she allegedly sent her cousin to purchase the substance.
SP Adam further disclosed that the suspect claimed she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she said influenced her actions.
The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a comprehensive investigation.
The police said the suspect will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.
Meanwhile, the command urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, advising against taking the law into one’s hands, especially in resolving family or marital disputes.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to justice and the protection of lives and property across the state, noting that the suspect remains in custody pending prosecution.
