Nigeria, UK Seal Agreements On Migration, Border Security, Business Visas

The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed three Memoranda of Understanding with the United Kingdom, focusing on migration cooperation, border security, and the expansion of business visas for UK firms operating in Nigeria.

The agreements were signed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who represented Nigeria during official engagements in the UK.

The deals cover a Migration Partnership framework, a Statement of Intent on tackling organised immigration crime and strengthening border security, as well as measures to ease access to business visas.

Tunji-Ojo said the agreements reflect Nigeria’s commitment to building a structured, transparent, and mutually beneficial migration system.

He stressed that the government is focused on delivering tangible results within a short period, noting that progress would be measured within the next year.

The minister also described the partnership as a potential model for future bilateral agreements, while acknowledging the longstanding collaboration between Nigeria and the UK, particularly with the UK Home Office.

He credited President Bola Tinubu for deepening ties between both countries.

On the visa expansion, Tunji-Ojo said the move is expected to boost trade and investment by making it easier for UK businesses to operate in Nigeria, adding that reducing migration-related barriers is key to achieving economic growth targets.

UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, described Nigeria as a key partner, noting that both countries share a common vision for stronger cooperation.

Similarly, UK Trade Envoy, Florence Eshalomi, said the visa agreement would deliver mutual economic benefits and support growth, particularly for Nigeria as Africa’s largest economy.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens while ensuring that individuals who exploit legal systems or engage in criminal activities are held accountable.

The agreements mark a significant milestone in Nigeria–UK relations, strengthening collaboration in migration management, security, and economic development.
