Manchester United are preparing to cope without Patrick Dorgu after the wing-back sustained a hamstring injury during Sunday’s thrilling 3–2 Premier League win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
The 21-year-old Dane, who scored United’s second goal with a powerful strike from outside the box, was substituted late in the match. Interim head coach Michael Carrick initially suspected cramp, but subsequent assessments have confirmed a more serious problem.
Although the full severity of the injury is still being evaluated, Dorgu is expected to be sidelined for several weeks, raising doubts over his availability during a packed schedule leading up to the March international break.
Dorgu has been one of United’s most impressive performers in recent weeks. Since arriving from Italian club Lecce a year ago as a wing-back, he has flourished in a more advanced left-sided role under Carrick. His goal against Arsenal came shortly after another decisive strike in the victory over Manchester City.
United have eight Premier League fixtures to navigate before the next international window, a period in which Dorgu had been tipped to feature for Denmark in the World Cup play-offs.
His injury could create an opportunity for Matheus Cunha, who has started the last two matches on the bench but made a decisive impact by scoring the winner against Arsenal after coming on.
Off the pitch, Manchester United are not anticipating any late movement in the January transfer window. With only days remaining, both incoming and outgoing deals are considered unlikely unless a significant offer is received.
Despite speculation linking Joshua Zirkzee with Juventus, Sky Sports News reports that no contact has been made between the two clubs regarding the Dutch striker.
Zirkzee missed the recent wins over Arsenal and Manchester City after sustaining a knock in the FA Cup clash with Brighton, but he is expected to return to the squad this weekend when United host Fulham.
Club insiders remain encouraged by Zirkzee’s attitude, viewing him as a positive influence within the squad despite limited game time in the first half of the season.
There has also been interest in Manuel Ugarte, though United regard him as a crucial part of their plans going forward.
With Carrick’s tactical tweaks and Bruno Fernandes operating in a more advanced role, Ugarte is expected to see increased involvement, rotating in midfield alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro.
Any major reinforcements are now planned for the summer, with midfield reinforcements the club’s top priority. Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba are all on United’s radar.
The need for investment was further underlined last week following confirmation that Casemiro will depart at the end of the season when his contract expires.
