Qatar’s Al Ahli Secure Signature of Former Super Eagles Skipper Troost-Ekong

Qatar Stars League side Al Ahli SC have officially completed the signing of former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, a move aimed at bolstering the club’s defensive strength.

The announcement, made through the club’s official platforms, puts an end to weeks of speculation surrounding the future of the seasoned centre-back.

Troost-Ekong arrives from Saudi Arabian club Al Kholood, where he was a mainstay in defence and one of the team’s most reliable performers. The 32-year-old has penned a deal that will see him remain with Al Ahli until June 2028, highlighting the club’s confidence in his experience and leadership.

Following his arrival, the Nigerian defender was handed his favoured number five jersey, a shirt number he has worn throughout much of his professional career.

Al Ahli view the acquisition as a significant boost as they push to build momentum and end the season on a strong note in the Qatar Stars League.

During his stint with Al Kholood, Troost-Ekong made 49 appearances, netting two goals, while providing composure, organisation, and authority at the back. His displays in Saudi Arabia further cemented his reputation as a dependable defender with extensive experience across Europe, the Middle East, and international football.

The move comes shortly after Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football, bringing to a close an illustrious career with the Super Eagles. He captained Nigeria on several occasions and played a prominent role in past AFCON campaigns, earning admiration for his leadership and consistency, aside from the most recent tournament in Morocco.

With his international duties now behind him, Troost-Ekong is set to channel his full focus into club football as he embarks on a new chapter of his career in Qatar.
