Former lawmaker Dino Melaye has accused the Nigerian Senate of planning to manipulate the 2027 general elections following reports that it rejected the electronic transmission of election results.
Naija News reports that Melaye, speaking in a statement on Friday, strongly criticised the Senate’s decision, describing it as a serious setback to the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
According to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, the move amounts to an open endorsement of election rigging and signals a calculated plan to compromise the credibility of the 2027 polls.
Melaye warned that rejecting electronic transmission of results creates room for manipulation and fraud, insisting that the decision represents a major step backwards for democracy in the country.
He urged lawmakers and Nigerians to resist what he described as “a blatant attempt to subvert the will of the people” and to work collectively to ensure future elections are free, fair, and transparent.
Meanwhile, the ADC has also condemned the APC-led 10th Senate for rejecting key amendments to the Electoral Act designed to strengthen the credibility of elections and improve the operations of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the Senate’s action as a deliberate effort to weaken Nigeria’s democratic system.
The party specifically criticised the refusal to approve electronic transmission of results, as well as the rejection of provisions allowing for electronic downloading of voter cards.
The ADC further faulted the Senate’s decision to shorten election notice periods and significantly reduce the timelines for publishing candidates’ lists.
According to the party, these actions reflect the ruling party’s fear of conducting free and fair elections in 2027, despite its current political dominance.
