The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of allegedly attempting to destabilise the party’s structure in the state.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the state chairman, Leader Sampson, the party called on President Bola Tinubu to step in and “call Wike to order.”
Sampson alleged that the ADC is currently experiencing significant pressure and interference, particularly in Ikwerre Local Government Area, warning that the situation could extend to all 23 local government areas in Rivers State.
According to him, the party uncovered what it described as a calculated effort by the FCT Minister, allegedly working through Charles Wobodo, Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Council, and under the supervision of Samuel Nwanosike, to establish parallel and unconstitutional party structures within the ADC.
He claimed the alleged moves include attempts to impose unofficial LGA and ward executives, as well as directives purportedly encouraging elected ward councillors to unlawfully assume leadership roles within the party.
The ADC described the development as an attack on democratic principles, political pluralism, and citizens’ constitutional rights to freely associate and participate in politics.
“The political space is open to all, and no individual or group should attempt to intimidate or suppress others from offering alternative leadership options,” the statement read, adding that efforts to silence opposition often reflect fear of accountability or poor performance in office.
The party urged President Tinubu to intervene promptly to preserve democratic norms and maintain political stability in Rivers State.
It also called on relevant security agencies to investigate the allegations and take necessary measures to prevent any actions that could spark political unrest in the state.
The Rivers ADC reaffirmed its determination to defend its legally recognised structures and constitutional rights against any form of interference, pledging to pursue peaceful and lawful means in protecting the integrity of the party.
The chapter reiterated its commitment to democratic ideals, peaceful political participation, and good governance in Rivers State and across Nigeria.
It further advised members and supporters to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant while continuing to back the party’s vision of credible and people-focused leadership.
