Security Tension In Edo Assembly As Bullets, Gunshot Marks Stall First Sitting Of 2026

The Edo State House of Assembly has postponed its first plenary session of 2026 following the discovery of bullets and gunshot holes on the roof of the Assembly complex.

Naija News gathered that lawmakers promptly invited the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to probe the incident.

Speaking to journalists, the Majority Leader, Jonathan Ebamewu, confirmed that the matter is under investigation and announced that the sitting had been deferred indefinitely.

“We were prepared to commence sitting today when our attention was drawn to an incident within the premises. I immediately contacted the Commissioner of Police and the DSS,” Ebamewu said.

“We have handed everything over to the security agencies to thoroughly investigate and provide a comprehensive report on the cause of the situation.”

He added that although the Assembly was ready to begin its legislative activities, the unexpected development made it impossible to proceed.

“For now, the situation is under control, and we were fully prepared to sit today. Unfortunately, due to this incident, we may not be able to hold the session.

“We want to give the security agencies ample time to thoroughly sweep the complex and submit a report that will address all concerns.

“Nonetheless, the House remains calm and focused, and we are not distracted,” he assured.
