The Senator representing Osun West, Lere Oyewumi, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Accord Party.
Oyewumi, who was elected on the PDP platform during the 2023 general elections, announced his defection in a statement issued on Monday in Osogbo.
Prior to his departure, Oyewumi was the last PDP senator from Osun State. His exit follows the earlier defections of two other senators from the state—Olubiyi Fadeyi and Francis Fadahunsi—who had previously joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP in Osun had also lost three members of the House of Representatives of Nigeria to the APC during a wave of defections in 2025.
The latest development comes months after the Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, defected from the PDP to the Accord Party in December 2025.
Although Oyewumi initially remained in the PDP after the governor’s defection, speculation about his political future intensified after six members of the House of Representatives from the state also moved to the Accord Party.
In addition, the 25 members of the Osun State House of Assembly elected on the PDP platform had earlier defected to the Accord Party to align with the governor.
According to a statement issued by his media aide, Timileyin Popoola, the senator formally registered as a member of the Accord Party at Ward 9 in Ikire, located in Irewole Local Government Area.
The statement noted that Oyewumi was officially received into the party by the Osun State Chairman of the Accord Party, Victor Akande, alongside other party leaders and supporters.
It added that the senator’s decision to leave the PDP followed his earlier resignation from the party due to internal disagreements.
According to the statement, the move was driven by irreconcilable differences within the party and a desire to strengthen his commitment to the people he represents, while also advancing policies that promote development in Osun State.
