Former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, has called on key stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to put aside their disagreements and support the caretaker leadership reportedly backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Lamido made the appeal during a Ramadan breakfast he hosted for PDP members in his hometown of Namadi in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area.
According to him, backing the caretaker committee is the only realistic option left to prevent the party from sliding into total collapse. He described the committee as the only remaining legitimate structure within the party.
The former governor criticised the PDP national convention held in Ibadan by some PDP governors, alleging that it was driven by hidden motives and had ultimately worsened the party’s internal crisis instead of resolving it.
Lamido acknowledged that some members had reservations about Wike’s conduct within the party but insisted that, from a legal standpoint, the caretaker committee supported by the former Rivers State governor remains the only recognised structure in the PDP.
He therefore urged party members to accept the situation and unite behind the committee to promote reconciliation and open the door for broader discussions aimed at stabilising the party.
Lamido warned that the PDP is currently facing a serious crisis and requires collective sacrifices from all members to survive.
He added that every stakeholder shares responsibility for the party’s current challenges, as many leaders insisted on their own approaches while trying to restore the party’s former strength.
According to him, the PDP played a major role in shaping the political careers of many of its members, making it morally wrong for them to allow the party to decline because of personal interests.
Lamido stressed that urgent reconciliation among party leaders is necessary, warning that failure to resolve internal disputes could jeopardise the party’s chances of effectively participating in the 2027 general elections.
