Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is set to enhance his technical expertise through short-term internships at top European clubs, all while maintaining his role with Nigeria’s national team.
Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick confirmed that plans are in motion to place the Franco-Malian coach in brief training stints with elite European sides. The proposal has the backing of FIFA’s technical chief, Arsène Wenger, following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Pinnick emphasized that the initiative is intended to further develop Chelle’s skills rather than address any deficiencies. “We want to give him additional exposure at some of these top clubs worldwide to add to his technical knowledge and football insight. It’s not about shortcomings—he’s already exceptionally good,” he said.
The NFF has expressed full support for Chelle’s continued leadership. NFF president Ibrahim Gusau praised his tenure since January 2024, describing it as both productive and transformative.
“Mr. Chelle has done remarkably well with his technical team over the past year. He has shown outstanding capability, and we are committed to working with him,” Gusau stated.
Under Chelle, the Super Eagles have remained unbeaten in regulation time across 17 competitive matches, achieving 11 wins and six draws. The team set a new national record at AFCON 2025 by scoring 14 goals in the tournament while remaining unbeaten in regular time through all seven matches.
Gusau noted that preparations for the next AFCON qualifiers, starting in March, are already underway. “The journey to the next AFCON begins immediately. We must build on our progress without delay,” he said, highlighting that injuries had sidelined a few key players during the recent tournament.
Team captain Wilfred Ndidi also backed Chelle, emphasizing the importance of stability. “For continuity, we should keep the coach. He’s a wonderful manager, and the focus now should be on maintaining the team’s momentum for upcoming competitions,” Ndidi remarked.
