The Supreme Court is set to give its judgment on Friday, January 16, 2026, in the ₦1.35 billion fraud case involving former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, and his son, Mustapha Lamido.
Naija News reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) confirmed the development on Thursday, noting that the apex court has fixed the date to rule on its appeal.
The EFCC approached the Supreme Court in August 2023, challenging the July 25, 2023 ruling of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, which discharged Sule Lamido and his son from the case.
In its appeal filed on July 31, 2023, the anti-graft agency urged the Supreme Court to overturn the appellate court’s decision and order that the matter be sent back to the trial court for continuation.
According to the EFCC, the Court of Appeal erred in law by freeing the defendants despite the existence of sufficient evidence to justify the continuation of the trial.
The Lamidos, alongside Aminu Wada Abubakar and their companies, Bamaina Holdings Limited and Speeds International Limited, were initially arraigned before Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Abuja on a 37-count amended charge.
They were accused of money laundering involving the alleged diversion of ₦1.35 billion during Sule Lamido’s tenure as governor between 2007 and 2015. The EFCC claims the funds were kickbacks from companies that secured contracts from the Jigawa State Government.
The trial, which commenced in 2015, saw the EFCC call more than 16 witnesses. Rather than opening their defence, the defendants filed a no-case submission, arguing that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case.
Justice Ojukwu dismissed the application, ruling that the defendants had a case to answer and ordering them to enter their defence.
Unhappy with the decision, Sule Lamido appealed to the Court of Appeal, which subsequently discharged him and his son.
