President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, decorated Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police.

The ceremony took place at 4pm at the President’s office.

In attendance were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the immediate past IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.

His appointment came just 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, when he would have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.

However, under the amended Police Act, which allows Inspectors-General of Police to serve a four-year tenure regardless of age, Disu may remain in office until 2030.

Tinubu, who pinned the new insignia on Disu’s uniform, commended the outgoing IGP Egbetokun for his service to the nation.

Addressing the new police chief, Tinubu said his appointment came at a critical moment for the country’s security.

“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said.

He urged Disu to rebuild public confidence in the police and work in synergy with other security agencies.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” Tinubu added.

While calling on him to advance the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the President expressed confidence in Disu’s discipline and operational experience.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” he said.

Speaking shortly after his decoration as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, Disu said the appointment came as a surprise, particularly as it was barely 48 days to his retirement.

He, however, expressed gratitude to the President for the confidence reposed in him.

Tinubu also paid tribute to the outgoing IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony with his spouse.

“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” he said.

He urged Egbetokun to remain available to support his successor.

“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” the President stated.

The President called on all security stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard lives and property during what he described as a critical period for the nation.

Among dignitaries present at the ceremony were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; retired AIG Hakeem Odumosu; senior government officials; as well as the parents and family members of the Acting IGP.
